True Autumn color palette: the colors that work, and why

Rust, brick and pumpkin carry the warm reds. Moss and olive gold hold the greens, which lean yellow rather than blue. Mustard is the yellow, chocolate the brown, and deep teal is the one cool-leaning colour that works, because it is deep and slightly warmed rather than icy.

Warm cream, camel and chestnut are the neutrals, with dark olive as the deep anchor instead of black.

Icy pastels are the clearest failure: icy pink, baby blue, cool lilac. They put blue against golden skin and the face turns grey. Cool fuchsia and blue-red do the same thing at higher saturation.

Black and optical white are the other two to avoid near the face. Both are cold and absolute, and against a warm rich colouring they read as a hole in the outfit rather than an anchor. Dark olive, chestnut and warm cream replace them.

Deep Autumn is the neighbour to rule out, and the axis is depth rather than hue. Deep Autumn leads with darkness: mahogany, forest, deep brick. If the deepest colors feel natural and mid-tones feel slightly weak, you sit in Deep Autumn. True Autumn is comfortable in the middle of the depth range.

Soft Autumn is the other neighbour, one step down in saturation. If rich colour feels like too much and softened earth feels right, that is the direction to move.
