The science

The three-anchor approach to lip color

01

Most lip wardrobes reduce to three anchors: an everyday nude, a red, and a deeper berry — and undertone decides which version of each suits you. Nude is the least forgiving: a nude lighter than your lip or fighting your undertone reads washed-out instantly, which is why "the perfect nude" is a genuine search. The rule that works: your nude should sit within a shade of your natural lip depth, matched to your undertone.

02

Reds split on the blue-orange axis — blue-based reds flatter cool undertones and make teeth read whiter; orange-based reds light up warm undertones. Olive skin, as usual, does best with muted, slightly cool versions of everything, because high-warmth colors amplify sallowness. Depth matters too: deep skin carries rich saturated color that overwhelms fair skin, and pale milky shades that glow on fair skin go gray on deep.

Finish changes everything: the same shade, three ways

A color that overwhelms in matte often flatters in sheer: mattes read as fully saturated statements, creams sit in the middle, and sheer/gloss formats deliver the undertone-matched hue at half the commitment — the right first format for your measured red if bold color feels foreign. Deep skin gets a bonus rule: high-pigment formulas show truer color (sheer formulas can go ashy), so your berry wants to be opaque. Fair skin inverts it: opaque darks can read gothic fast, and the sheer version of your berry is the everyday one. Your three anchors from this tool, each in the finish matching your comfort level, is a complete lip wardrobe.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find my nude lipstick shade?+

Match your natural lip depth (within one shade) and your skin undertone. Warm skins suit peachy and caramel nudes, cool skins rosy and mauve nudes, olive skins muted rosewood. If a nude makes you look tired, it was too light or too gray for you.

What red lipstick suits me?+

Cool undertone: blue-based cherry and raspberry reds. Warm: coral, tomato, and brick reds. Neutral: classic true red. Blue-based reds also make teeth appear whiter — a real optical effect.

Does lip color depend on hair color?+

Less than undertone. Hair frames the palette (high-contrast coloring carries bolder lips), but the harmony that makes a shade "yours" happens between the lip color and your skin’s undertone.

What lipstick makes teeth look whiter?+

Blue-based shades — the cool cherry and berry families — optically cancel yellow. Warm oranges and browns do the opposite. If whiter teeth is the goal, pick from the cool column of your palette even as a warm-toned person (a cool red is many warm people’s best statement).

Why does the same lipstick look different on me than online?+

Your lip pigmentation underneath — swatches are on paper or forearms. Deeper natural lip color shifts every shade darker and cooler; the fix is checking shades ON lips, or brands that photograph on multiple models.
