The vein test (green veins mean warm, blue mean cool) is the most repeated undertone method online and one of the least reliable. Vein color depends on skin thickness and how deep the vessel sits as much as on undertone, and on deep skin it often returns nothing at all. This quiz includes it, weighted low, and leans on signals that hold up better.

The stronger signals: bare skin against plain white paper in indirect daylight (golden or peachy reads warm, pink or bluish reads cool, beige reads neutral, a faint green or gray cast reads olive); whether gold or silver flatters you; whether you burn or tan; and which colors make you look tired. Undertone is the constant hue beneath your skin and does not move with a tan, which is why tone and undertone get confused.

The result places you in warm, cool, neutral or olive, with olive called out separately because it is the undertone most often misread as warm. Is the vein test accurate?+
Weakly. It is affected by skin thickness, vessel depth and lighting, and it fails on deeper skin. Use it as one input among several, which is what this quiz does.
What is a neutral undertone?+
A balance of warm and cool where neither gold nor silver clearly wins and beige reads true against white paper. It is a real category, not a failure to decide.
What is an olive undertone?+
A faint green or gray cast beneath the skin, at any depth. It is often misread as warm; the giveaway is that classic warm colors look muddy on it.
Does undertone change with tanning?+
No. Tanning changes depth (skin tone). Undertone is the hue underneath and stays the same, which is why it is the right basis for choosing colors.
