How facial symmetry is measured — and what it actually means

This tool finds the midline of your face from landmark geometry, then compares mirrored pairs of points — eye corners, brows, nostrils, mouth corners, jaw — measuring how far each pair deviates from perfect mirror placement. The deviations are normalized by your face width and combined into a symmetry percentage, with the largest contributors named so you can see where the asymmetry lives.

Studies that measure real faces find visible asymmetry in essentially everyone, and faces made artificially perfect by mirroring one half consistently look uncanny rather than attractive. What the research actually says about symmetry
Symmetry is the most-studied single variable in facial attractiveness research, and the findings are more modest than the internet version: meta-analyses (Rhodes 2006 is the standard reference) find a reliable but moderate preference for more symmetric faces — alongside equally strong effects for averageness and skin condition. Crucially, the preference holds for natural variation; artificially perfect faces made by mirroring one half consistently rate as strange rather than beautiful, because normal faces are asymmetric and observers are calibrated to that.
Your percentage should be read against the population, not against 100: typical straight-on photos of real faces measure in the high-80s to mid-90s on a landmark measure like this one. The per-feature breakdown is the useful part — knowing your asymmetry concentrates in, say, the brow line is actionable (brow grooming evens the read in minutes); knowing your jaw carries a couple of percent tells you what every human jaw carries.
Asymmetry causes: the benign list
Nearly all facial asymmetry is developmental noise — the two face halves grow semi-independently and never match perfectly. On top of that baseline: habitual chewing side develops one masseter slightly more, side-sleeping and posture can contribute marginally over decades, and dental work or tooth loss shifts the lower face. The medical exceptions are sudden-onset asymmetry (facial droop appearing over hours or days is an emergency — that is nerve, not geometry) and progressive jaw deviation, which is orthodontic.
