The science
How old do I look? How the age guesser reads a face
01
Upload one photo and the age guesser finds your face and reads it with an age model: the age and gender network of face-api, which its makers trained on faces labeled with their age from eight public face sets, among them UTK, FG-NET, ChaLearn, IMDB and Wikipedia. It reads your photo and its mirror image and averages the two, because the two alone can read a couple of years apart. All of it runs in your browser: the model, about 1 MB, downloads once, and your photo is never uploaded.
02
The answer is a range, not one exact number, because one photo cannot pin an age to the year. Its width is measured. We ran the same model on 577 photos of public figures whose age on the day of the photo is known, and half of them were read within 5.3 years of their real age. So the result is the model's best single guess plus or minus 5 years, a range that held the real age of 51% of those faces.
03
Give your real age and the result says how your face reads against it. Inside the range reads about your age. A real age above the range reads younger, below it reads older: a gap bigger than the model’s typical error.
How accurate is an AI age guesser? We measured it
An age guesser that gives one number to the year hides how far off it can be, so we measured ours. The celebrity look alike on this site holds photos of public figures from Wikimedia Commons. For 577 of them we know the date of birth (from Wikidata) and the day the photo was taken (from the photo's Commons page), so we know how old each person was in the photo. We ran the age model on every one and compared.
It was off by 6.7 years on average and 5.3 at the median, with 47% of faces within 5 years and 77% within 10. Its makers report 4.54 years across their own test photos and 6.54 on Wikipedia photos, the set most like ours. Public figures are not everyone: makeup, styling and stage light change how old a face reads, so a casual selfie can read differently.
Where it leans: the model pulls ages toward the middle. Faces in their 20s read 1.7 years older on average, faces in their 40s 4.9 years younger and faces of 60 and over 3.0 years younger. The 8 faces under 20 read 15.3 years older, too few to measure the model on, which is why there is no verdict under 20. Women read 4.1 years younger on average and men about right. By where people are from, the biggest leans were public figures from South Asia, read 6.4 years younger (67 faces), and from Africa, read 3.4 years older (67 faces). A face small in the frame reads worse: faces under 120 pixels wide in our photos were off by 7.8 years on average, against 6.6 for the rest, so fill the frame.
| Real age in the photo | Faces | Average miss | Average lean |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 to 19 | 8 | 15.3 years | 15.3 years older |
| 20 to 29 | 142 | 4.7 years | 1.7 years older |
| 30 to 39 | 173 | 6.4 years | 2.4 years younger |
| 40 to 49 | 126 | 7.6 years | 4.9 years younger |
| 50 to 59 | 81 | 7.6 years | 3.5 years younger |
| 60 and over | 47 | 7.7 years | 3.0 years younger |
| Women, all ages | 280 | 7.8 years | 4.1 years younger |
| Men, all ages | 297 | 5.6 years | about right |
Do I look younger or older than my age?
Type your real age before the photo, or on the result after it, and the result reads it against the range. The cut-off is the range itself: 5 years either side of the best single guess, the width that held the real age of 51% of the reference faces. Inside it, your face reads about your age. A real age above the range means your face reads younger than you are; below it, older.
Among the reference faces aged 20 and over, the split was 31% younger, 52% about their age and 17% older. The model leans young on faces over 40 and on women, so a "reads younger" there is partly the model. Under 20 there is no verdict at all, only the range. Your age is never sent anywhere: it stays in the page on your device.
One photo is one reading. Two different, dated photos of the same person read 6.8 years apart at the median, after allowing for the years between them (23 people), which is more than the range is wide on either side. Read two or three photos taken the same way before you settle on younger or older.
What makes you look older in a photo
We changed every reference photo on purpose and read it again, to see what moves the age guess. The table shows how far each change moved one read of the same photo at the median, and which way it leaned on average across all the photos.
| Change to the photo | Typical move | Average lean |
|---|---|---|
| Mirrored, left to right | 2.5 years | no steady lean |
| Darker, half the light | 2.0 years | 0.9 years younger on average |
| Brighter, overexposed | 2.0 years | no steady lean |
| Light falling off to one side | 1.6 years | no steady lean |
| Warm indoor light | 1.4 years | no steady lean |
| Black and white | 1.9 years | 1.4 years younger on average |
| Smoothed, like a beauty filter | 1.9 years | 1.7 years younger on average |
| Head tilted 10 degrees | 2.4 years | no steady lean |
| Half the resolution | 1.6 years | no steady lean |
| Saved as a low-quality JPEG | 1.7 years | 0.6 years older on average |
| Cropped close to the face | 1.8 years | no steady lean |
Most changes move a single read by a couple of years in either direction, which is why the tool reads your photo and its mirror image and averages them. Two lean one way: a smoothing filter takes the fine texture away and the face reads younger, and black and white reads younger too. A smile leans the other way: across the reference photos, smiling faces read about 2.2 years older than neutral ones relative to their age.
Two things we could not measure. Glasses: no reference photo was labeled for them. Turning the head to the side: a turn cannot be made by editing a photo, and our estimate of it from the face landmarks was not reliable enough to sort the photos by. Take glasses off and face the camera.
Guess my age by photo: how to take the photo
The age guesser takes a few seconds per photo. For a reading you can compare from one month to the next:
- Step 1Face the camera straight on, at eye level and about arm’s length away, with your whole face filling a good part of the frame and your hair off your forehead.
- Step 2Use soft daylight from in front of you, not a lamp overhead or a window to one side. No filter, no beauty mode, glasses off.
- Step 3Keep a relaxed, neutral face. Type your real age if you want the younger or older verdict, then add the photo.
- Step 4Take a second photo the same way and compare. Readings that agree are worth more than any single one.
What makes a face look older: the skin
Skin is part of what makes a face read older, not just its shape. In a study of cheek skin from 170 women and girls aged 11 to 76, the more even the skin color, the younger it was judged, and the evenness of both pigment (melanin) and redness (hemoglobin) counted (Matts and colleagues, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2007). An earlier study put the skin color of women of different ages on the same face shapes and found the same: more even color read younger (Fink, Grammer and Matts, Evolution and Human Behavior, 2006). Both studied women.
Those signals can be measured from a photo. The AI skin analysis reads redness and tone evenness on your face, and the skin age test answers the skin side of the question. The full report measures the same skin signals from your photo, along with your face proportions, and the SkinPal app tracks them week by week.
How old does she look? Guessing anyone’s age
The age guesser reads whatever face is largest in the photo, so it works for how old does she look, how old does he look and guess my age alike, with the same range and the same measured error. A photo of a screen or a print can read, but the model was measured on real photos only. To find which public figure a face is closest to, try the celebrity look alike.
FAQ
Common questions
How old do I look?+
Upload a photo and the age guesser gives the age your face reads as: a range 10 years wide with its best single guess in the middle, for example 26 to 36. On 577 reference faces of known age, the model read 47% within 5 years of their real age and 77% within 10. Add your real age to see whether you read younger, about your age or older.
How accurate is the age guesser?+
On 577 photos of public figures of known age it was off by 6.7 years on average and 5.3 at the median. It read men more closely (5.6 years off on average) than women (7.8), and the women in our photos read 4.1 years younger than their age on average. Faces in their 20s read closest (4.7 years). Its makers report an average error of 4.54 years on their own test photos, and 6.54 on photos from Wikipedia, the source closest to ours.
Why does it say I look older than I am?+
Three common reasons. The photo: hard light, a tilted head, a big smile and a small or blurry face all move the reading, and two different photos of the same person read 6.8 years apart at the median in our test. Your age: the model pulls ages toward the middle, so faces over 40 tend to read younger and teens older (the 8 faces under 20 in our test read 15 years older on average). And sometimes the face does read older, which is where skin comes in. Read a second photo in daylight before you trust one result.
Do I look younger or older than my age?+
The result tells you when you add your real age. If it is inside the range, 5 years either side of the best guess, your face reads about your age. If your real age is above the range, your face reads younger; below it, older. On the reference faces aged 20 and over, 31% read younger, 52% about their age and 17% older. There is no verdict under 20: too few of our reference faces were that young to check the model on.
Does smiling make you look older?+
In our reference photos, smiling faces read about 2.2 years older than neutral faces, relative to their real age, in women and men alike. That compares different people, not the same face smiling and not smiling, so treat it as a lean rather than a rule. A smile adds lines around the eyes and mouth, and for a steady reading a relaxed, neutral face is best.
Do glasses make you look older?+
We did not measure it: none of our reference photos were labeled for glasses, so this page gives no number. Glasses cover the eye area, part of what the model reads, so take them off for the photo.
Does a filter make you look younger?+
Yes. When we smoothed each reference photo the way a beauty filter does, it read 1.7 years younger on average, and 17% of photos moved 5 years or more. A filtered photo measures the filter, so use the camera's plain photo.
Can it guess someone else’s age from a photo?+
Yes. It reads the largest face in any photo, so it answers how old does she look or how old does he look as well as how old do I look, with the same range and the same measured error. The photo stays on your device.
Is my photo uploaded?+
No. The age model runs in your browser and your photo stays on your device. The model, about 1 MB, is downloaded on your first photo; nothing about your face, and not the age you type, is sent to a server.
