Developed by dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick in 1975, the scale classifies skin by how it responds to ultraviolet light — how easily it burns and how readily it tans — from type I (always burns, never tans) to type VI (never burns). It was built to calibrate light-based dermatology treatments, and it remains the standard shorthand in research and clinics.

The classic assessment combines genetic traits (eye color, natural hair color, unexposed skin tone, freckling) with sun-response history. That is what this test asks. Importantly, Fitzpatrick type is not the same as skin tone or ethnicity — two people with similar complexions can respond to sun differently.

Knowing your type sets your sun-protection baseline and predicts your cosmetic risk profile: lower types accumulate visible photoaging fastest, while higher types are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the marks left behind after breakouts and irritation.

The six types, properly explained

Type I always burns and never tans — the palest end, often with freckling, at the highest lifetime UV-damage and skin-cancer risk. Type II burns easily and tans minimally. Type III burns moderately then tans gradually — the most common type among white populations. Type IV burns minimally and tans easily (olive and light brown skin). Type V rarely burns and tans deeply. Type VI never burns in ordinary exposure and has deeply pigmented skin — lowest UV-cancer risk, but not zero, and melanomas in dark skin are caught later on average precisely because of the "never burns" assumption.

The scale was built in 1975 by dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick to dose phototherapy, not to describe beauty shades — which is why it asks how your skin *responds* to sun rather than what color it is. It remains the standard for laser settings, phototherapy dosing, and skin-cancer risk stratification, and it is the type a dermatologist or laser tech will ask you for.

What your type changes in practice

Types I–II: daily SPF 50, sun avoidance strategies actually matter, and any new or changing mole earns a dermatologist visit. Types III–IV: SPF 30–50 daily; you tan, but tanning is the damage, not protection from it. Types IV–VI: two specifics beyond daily SPF — post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk rises with type, so treating acne early and gently matters more, and laser/IPL settings must be adjusted for your type by someone who treats it routinely, because wrong settings cause burns and pigment damage. For cosmetic shade-matching, use the skin tone and undertone tools instead — that is what they measure.

Type III — the "burns moderately, tans gradually" middle of the scale. First strong exposures of the season burn; repeated exposure builds a tan. It is the most commonly self-reported type in the US.

Do darker Fitzpatrick types need sunscreen?+

Yes, for different emphasis: melanoma risk is lower but real (and diagnosed later on average), while UV-driven hyperpigmentation and melasma are more of a problem, not less. Daily SPF is the single best hyperpigmentation prevention for types IV–VI.

Is Fitzpatrick type the same as skin tone?+

No — it is a sun-reactivity scale. Two people with similar-looking tone can burn differently. For tone and undertone (foundation, color analysis), use the photo-based tone tools; for laser, phototherapy, and burn risk, Fitzpatrick is the right scale.
