The science

Why travel skin misbehaves — and what actually prevents it

01

Travel skin problems have three real causes: airplane cabins (humidity around 10–20%, drier than any desert — transepidermal water loss spikes), sun exposure patterns that differ from home, and broken sleep. None of them are cured by packing your full ten-step routine; all of them respond to the boring three — cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen — used consistently.

02

The counterintuitive part is what to leave home: actives. A week off retinoids and acids changes nothing about long-term results, while travel-stressed skin plus actives plus unfamiliar water is the classic trip-breakout recipe. The exception is trips long enough that a full pause matters (9+ nights) — then one active comes along, introduced after the first recovered night.

Flight-day skin, solved

Cabin air sits at desert humidity, and the fix is preparation plus sealing: moisturize generously before boarding, skip makeup on long-hauls if you can (it blocks re-application), and bring a small moisturizer to reapply mid-flight on anything over six hours — this beats every misting ritual, because mist without sealing evaporates and takes skin water with it. Land, cleanse, moisturize, SPF; save the actives for night two when sleep has normalized. The window seat gets meaningful UVA through the glass on daytime flights — the one context where SPF at 35,000 feet is not a meme.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I bring retinol on vacation?+

For a week or less, no — the break costs nothing and travel-stressed skin appreciates it. For longer trips, bring it and skip the first jet-lagged night or two.

Why does my skin break out when I travel?+

Cabin dehydration, sleep disruption, sunscreen slippage, and sometimes different water hardness. Rarely the hotel pillowcase everyone blames. Hydration plus SPF consistency prevents most of it.

What is the minimum skincare for a trip?+

Three things: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. Everything beyond that is optimization, and a week of just-the-basics is invisible in the long run.

Can I take skincare through airport security?+

Liquids under 100ml in the bag — decant into travel pots, or use the trip as your sample-sachet purge. Sunscreen counts as a liquid and is the one product not worth under-packing; buy a full size at destination if needed.

Why does my skin break out on holiday?+

The stack: flight dehydration, sleep debt, sunscreen layered with sweat, and sometimes richer food and alcohol — rarely the hotel water everyone blames. Double-cleansing on sweaty SPF days prevents most of it.
