Do you actually need to double cleanse?
Double cleansing (an oil or balm first, then a water-based cleanser) exists to remove what a single wash leaves behind: long-wear sunscreen, makeup, and heavy mineral filters. If you are not wearing those, the second step is just a second round of surfactant on your barrier. Seven questions to see which nights, if any, need it.

How many days a week do you wear sunscreen on your face?
The science
What double cleansing is for, and when it is just extra washing
01
Double cleansing is an oil or balm cleanser first, to dissolve sunscreen, makeup and sebum, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove the residue. It exists because modern sunscreens and long-wear makeup are built to resist water, and a single gel cleanser often leaves a film that reads as congestion by morning.
02
That is also the limit of it. On a day with no sunscreen and no makeup, the second cleanse removes nothing the first did not, and it takes a little more from the barrier each time. Dry or sensitive skin that double cleanses every night usually ends up tighter, not cleaner. The honest answer for many people is on SPF and makeup days, not always or never.
03
The quiz weighs what you wear, how oily your skin is, and whether your current cleanser leaves residue or leaves you tight, and gives one of three answers. The routine order checker on this site then places both cleansers correctly, and the skin type test settles whether a tight feeling after washing is your skin or your cleanser.
FAQ
Common questions
Do I need to double cleanse every night?+
Only if you wear sunscreen or makeup daily and your single cleanser leaves residue. On bare-skin days a single cleanse is the whole job.
Is double cleansing bad for dry skin?+
Done nightly on bare skin, it strips more than it removes. Dry skin should reserve it for SPF and makeup days and use a gentle, low-pH second cleanser.
What order is double cleansing?+
Oil or balm first on dry skin, emulsify with water, rinse, then the water-based cleanser. Oil first is the point; reversing it does not work.
Can I use micellar water instead of an oil cleanser?+
For light sunscreen and light makeup, yes, followed by a rinse. For water-resistant SPF and long-wear makeup, an oil or balm does the job micellar water does not.
