The science
How the height comparison chart works
01
Type two heights and the chart stands both people on one floor, to one scale, with the difference in centimeters, inches and percent. Add up to 6 people: names, a man or a woman figure, the average US man and woman, or a famous person with their reported height. Every height shows in cm and in feet and inches, converted exactly (1 inch is 2.54 cm), and nothing you type leaves your browser.
02
The figures are drawn for this site: one outline, scaled to each height, so what you see from the floor up is the real proportion between two people. Their width grows with their height and is a drawing, not a measurement; the chart compares height and nothing else.
03
Famous people’s heights come from Wikidata, the open database behind Wikipedia, which lists a height for 340 of the 600 actors, singers and athletes in our celebrity look alike set. They are reported heights, not measurements: Wikidata cites a source we count (a club, league, agency or film database page) for 82 of them, and many celebrity heights are self-reported, which runs high: a review of 64 studies found people over-report their height on average (Connor Gorber et al., Obesity Reviews, 2007). The chart draws a reported height with a dashed outline and labels it reported.
Height difference calculator: how to find the difference in height
The chart works out the difference as you type. By hand, it is three steps. Here is 6 ft 1 in against 5 ft 5 in.
- Step 1Turn both heights into one unit. In inches, feet x 12 + inches: 6 x 12 + 1 = 73 inches, and 5 x 12 + 5 = 65 inches. In centimeters, multiply inches by 2.54.
- Step 2Subtract the shorter from the taller: 73 - 65 = 8 inches, or 185.4 - 165.1 = 20.3 cm.
- Step 3For the difference as a percentage, divide by the shorter height: 8 ÷ 65 = 12.3% taller.
Two heights within half a centimeter read as the same height, and measure both people at the same time of day: in eight young adults measured to the millimeter, height changed by 19.3 mm over a day on average, more than half of the loss in the first hour after getting up (Tyrrell et al., Spine, 1985).
Height comparison chart: the average man and woman
The median US man aged 20 and over is 175.4 cm (5 ft 9 in) and the median US woman 161.3 cm (5 ft 4 in), measured in the CDC’s NHANES survey from 2015 to 2018: 14.1 cm (5.6 in) apart, 8.7% of her height. Here they stand beside two footballers whose heights their clubs publish, as Wikidata reports them: Lionel Messi at 169 cm and Cristiano Ronaldo at 185 cm, 16.0 cm apart.
Celebrity height comparison
Search a name in the chart to add them: 340 of the 600 people in our celebrity look alike set have a height on Wikidata, actors, singers, models and athletes from every region. Their figure gets a dashed outline and the word reported, and the line under the chart links each one to its Wikidata entry and says whether Wikidata cites a source.
The spread is wide. Simone Biles is reported at 142 cm (4′8″) and Usain Bolt at 196 cm (6′5″), 54.0 cm apart. Tom Cruise is listed at 170 cm, with no source cited on Wikidata, which is exactly the kind of number to read as reported.
Someone not in the list: add a person, type their name, and type the height you have for them.
Character height comparison
For characters from books, films, games or anime, add a person for each, type the character’s name and the height their official profile gives, and pick a figure. The chart takes heights from 30 to 300 cm, so most giants and small characters fit; anything else is treated as a typo. Heights from fan wikis vary between sources, so name yours when you share the chart.
Couple height difference
There is no ideal height difference for a couple; it is a preference. What the data does say: the median US man is 14.1 cm (5.6 in) taller than the median US woman. Put both heights in to see yours, and where each of you sits among US adults in the height calculator, which gives your height percentile.
Beyond the number
Height is fixed once you stop growing, but how tall you read is not: posture, the fit of your clothes and your build all change it. The height calculator predicts a child’s adult height and places any height on the growth charts, and the FFMI calculator measures how much muscle your frame carries for your height.
FAQ
Common questions
How do I find the difference in height?+
Put both heights in the same unit, then subtract the shorter from the taller. In feet and inches, turn each into inches first (feet x 12 + inches); in centimeters, subtract directly. For the difference as a percentage, divide the gap by the shorter height. The chart does all three as you type, in cm and inches.
How much taller is 6'1" than 5'5"?+
8 inches, which is 20.3 cm: 6 ft 1 in is 73 inches (185.4 cm) and 5 ft 5 in is 65 inches (165.1 cm). The taller person is 12.3% taller.
What height difference is best for couples?+
There is no best difference; it is a preference. For reference, the median US man is 14.1 cm (5.6 in) taller than the median US woman: 5 ft 9 in against 5 ft 4 in, measured in the CDC’s NHANES survey from 2015 to 2018. Put your two heights in the chart to see yours.
How tall is the average man and woman?+
In the US, the median man aged 20 and over is 175.4 cm (5 ft 9 in) and the median woman 161.3 cm (5 ft 4 in), from measured heights in the CDC’s NHANES survey, 2015 to 2018. Averages differ by country: the tallest and shortest countries are about 20 cm or more apart (NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, 2016).
Are celebrity heights accurate?+
Treat them as reported, not measured. The heights in this chart are the ones Wikidata lists, and Wikidata cites a source we count for 82 of the 340: club and team pages for many athletes, film and fan sites for many actors. Many are self-reported, and people over-report their height on average.
Can I compare more than two people?+
Yes, up to 6. Add people one at a time, add the average US man or woman, or search a famous person by name. The chart rescales so everyone fits, and it states the difference between the first person and each of the others, and between the tallest and the shortest.
Is the height comparison chart to scale?+
Yes, in height: every figure stands on the same floor and is scaled to its own height on one shared scale, with a grid line every 20 cm or every foot. The figures’ width is a drawing that grows with height, not a measurement of anyone’s build.
