Sebaceous filaments are the normal lining of a pore: a thin column of oil and dead cells that every nose has. They show as uniform gray or tan dots, evenly spaced, flat to the touch, and they refill within two to four weeks of being squeezed out, because the pore is doing its job. They are not a problem to fix.

Blackheads are open comedones: a pore plugged with oxidized oil and debris. They are darker, larger, irregular in size and spacing, slightly raised, and they do not come back on a schedule once cleared. Salicylic acid and retinoids treat blackheads. Nothing removes sebaceous filaments for longer than a few weeks, and aggressive extraction enlarges the pore.

Because they are filaments, not blackheads. Refill within about a month after extraction is the clearest sign.
Are pore strips a good idea?+
They pull out filaments and give a satisfying result that lasts a few weeks. Used often, they irritate the skin and can enlarge pores. They do nothing for true blackheads that a retinoid would not do better.
