Looksmax AI: Find Your Halo and Failo

Looksmaxxing AI that measures instead of rating: pick men or women, upload one photo, and nine features are ranked against reference faces of your sex. You get your two strongest (halo) and two weakest (failo), the share of faces each one beats, and the honest lever for each failo. It runs on your device, so your photo is never uploaded.

Step 1 of 2 · compare me with

Your features are ranked against 85 men or 73 women, because faces differ by sex: the women’s median canthal tilt is +5.7°, the men’s +2.5°.

The science

What is looksmax AI?

01

Looksmaxxing is the forum word for working on your looks, and looksmax AI is the tool meant to tell you where to start. A single score for your whole face says how you scored, not why, or what to work on first.

02

This looksmaxxing AI measures instead. It maps 478 points on your face in your browser, takes the nine structure and feature measurements a front photo can read, and ranks each one against 158 reference faces of public figures, 85 men and 73 women, so you see your two strongest features (your halo) and your two weakest (your failo), with what can and cannot change each one.

Looksmax test: how your halo and failo are found

The looksmax test reads nine measurements from your photo: symmetry, golden ratio match, facial thirds, face width to height, midface ratio, philtrum to chin, jaw angle, jaw width and canthal tilt. Each one is placed among the reference faces of the sex you compare with, as the share of those faces you beat. Your halo is the two with the highest share, your failo the two with the lowest.

Which way counts as better comes from the SkinPal face report, so a failo here is never something the report calls a strength: a higher symmetry and golden ratio match are better, a more upward canthal tilt and a sharper jaw angle are better, a wider face on a man and a more compact midface on a woman are better, and every other measurement is better nearer the middle of its typical range.

The reference faces are 158 public figures, 85 men and 73 women, from Wikimedia Commons photos facing the camera (the nose within 0.06 face widths of center, the eye line within 8° of level). Press photos are taken from metres away, and a close lens reads a face narrower at the sides, so each reference face is re-projected to how a phone at arm’s length (45 cm) sees it, using the face model’s own depth estimate. At the median that lowered the face width ratio by 0.26 and raised the jaw angle by 2.3°, more than the gap between many faces.

Halo and failo meaning, feature by feature

Halo and failo are forum words: a forum convention, not research. The table gives, for each feature the looksmax AI ranks, which way counts as better for men and for women, and the honest lever: what changes how it reads, and what does not.

The nine ranked features, which way is better, and the lever for each
FeatureBetter, menBetter, womenThe lever
SymmetryHigherHigherNo exercise evens out the bone; head tilt, camera angle and an uneven parting or beard line add most of what a photo shows.
Golden ratioHigherHigherNone for the bone proportions themselves, and famously attractive faces miss the canon all the time; hair and frames change how they read.
Facial thirdsNearer the middle of 0.80 to 1.25Nearer the middle of 0.80 to 1.25Bone, so none for the proportion itself; camera height moves this number, and on a man a beard changes how long the lower third reads.
Width to height (fWHR)WiderNearer the middle of 1.70 to 2.12Bone, so only a little: body fat and water retention move it, and a phone held close reads the face narrower.
Midface ratioNearer the middle of 0.90 to 1.11More compactBone, so none for the proportion itself; camera height moves it more than anything, and a low camera lengthens it.
Philtrum ratioNearer the middle of 0.43 to 0.64Nearer the middle of 0.44 to 0.65Bone and soft tissue that no exercise changes; a mustache or the lip line changes how the split reads.
Jaw angleSharper (a smaller angle)Sharper (a smaller angle)Body fat and water retention: the bone stays, but they change how sharp the jaw corner reads by several degrees, and so does a beard line.
Jaw widthNearer the middle of 0.79 to 0.90Nearer the middle of 0.70 to 0.80Body fat, which shows along the jaw first; the bone stays, and on a man a beard can widen or narrow how it reads.
Canthal tiltMore upwardMore upwardBrow grooming and less puffiness change how the outer corner reads; only surgery (canthoplasty) changes the tilt itself.

Not ranked: your face shape, eye shape, lip shape and eye color (named categories, nothing to rank), your pupillary distance (a fit number for glasses) and your skin (it follows the light more than the face, and the reference photos are press photos). All of them are measured in the full report.

How to take the looksmax test

The looksmax test takes under a minute and needs one clear photo from the front, read in your browser and never uploaded.

  1. Step 1Pick who to compare with, men or women.
  2. Step 2Hold the phone at arm’s length and at eye level, face the lens straight on, keep your head level, hair off your forehead and a relaxed, closed mouth.
  3. Step 3Read your harmony, your two halo features and your two failo features, each with the share of reference faces it beats, and the lever for each failo.

Raised brows, a smile, a tilted head or a phone held close change several of the nine readings. Take two photos the same way: if both name the same failo, it is your face, not the photo.

Looksmax AI vs a single score

A single score puts one number on your whole face; this looksmax AI tells you which parts lift it and which hold it back. Both read the same geometry here. For a single number, the PSL score test puts your facial harmony on the forum’s 1 to 8 scale and the attractiveness test on a 1 to 10 scale. To compare your face with someone else’s, run a mog battle; for the eye area on its own, the hunter eyes test.

The free result shows your harmony and your two halo and two failo features in full. The full report measures all 19, including the five not ranked here and your skin, against their typical ranges, says what each means for your face, and builds a 12 week plan around your failos.

Looksmax app or a looksmax test in your browser

Unlike a looksmaxxing app, this looksmax test needs no install. It runs in the browser on your phone or computer: the face model loads into the page, measures your photo there, and nothing about your face leaves the device. The SkinPal app is for what comes after the test: a daily glow up plan for styling, exercise, habits and skin care, and your before and after week by week.

Want the whole face read, not ranked? The face analysis gives your harmony, face shape, symmetry, thirds and canthal tilt against their typical ranges from the same kind of photo.

FAQ

Common questions

Is looksmax AI accurate?+

This one measures rather than rates, so it can be checked. The same photo always gives the same result. Across 948 pairs of versions of the same reference photo (mirrored, rotated 2°, half the resolution, cropped, saved as a lower quality JPEG), the weakest feature stayed the same 83% of the time and stayed among the two failos shown 95% of the time. A different pose, light or camera distance moves it more, so take every photo the same way.

What does halo mean in looksmaxxing?+

A halo is a feature strong enough to lift how the whole face reads, named after the halo effect in psychology. It is a forum convention, not research. Here your halo is the measured feature where you beat the largest share of the reference faces of your sex.

What is a failo?+

Failo is forum slang for the feature that drags the rest of a face down, the opposite of a halo. It is a forum convention, not research. Here your failo is the measured feature where you beat the smallest share of the reference faces of your sex, which can still sit inside the typical range.

Can you fix a failo?+

Most failos are bone, and bone does not change with exercises, mewing or bone smashing in adults. What changes is how a feature reads: body fat and water show along the jaw first, a beard or haircut changes how the lower and upper face read, groomed brows change the eye area, and camera height and distance change several of these numbers. Procedures exist for each bone feature, and they are decisions for a surgeon.

Do I need a looksmax app?+

Not for the test. This looksmax test runs in your browser, with nothing to install and no signup, and the photo never leaves your device. The SkinPal app is a separate product for what comes after: it builds a glow up plan from your face and skin and tracks your before and after.

Why does it ask if I am a man or a woman?+

Because faces differ by sex, and a feature only means something against faces like yours. Among the reference faces, the women’s median canthal tilt is +5.7° against +2.5° for the men, and the men’s median facial harmony is 76 against 72 for the women. Your features are ranked against your own group.

Is my photo uploaded?+

No. The face model runs in your browser and your photo stays on your device. Nothing about your face is sent to a server.
