The science
How a beard changes the shape of your face
01
A beard becomes part of the outline people read as your face. Hair below the chin moves the bottom of that outline down by its own length, and hair on the sides widens the jaw. That is why barbers choose a beard by face shape: grow length where the face is short, width where it is long or narrow at the jaw, keep the sides tight where the jaw is already wide, and square off a narrow chin. The rule is barber convention, not research, and this test tells you which of your readings set each part of the plan.
02
The test measures the parts of your face a beard works on. Face length against cheek width is the same ratio the face shape detector reads. Jaw width against cheek width shows how wide your jaw is, chin width against jaw width how broad your chin is for its jaw, and the jaw angle is the gonial angle the jawline analysis measures. Each ratio is compared with 73 men photographed the same way, front-facing with the mouth closed. A reading in the bottom third or the top third of those men moves the plan; the middle third leaves that part at its default.
03
There is research behind the idea that a beard reshapes the lower face. In a study of men photographed clean-shaven and bearded, beards raised ratings of masculinity and dominance, and making the jaw larger raised those ratings for clean-shaven faces but did much less for bearded ones, which the authors read as beards enlarging the look of the jaw (Dixson, Lee, Sherlock and Talamas, Evolution and Human Behavior, 2017).
Which beard style suits me? How the test reads your face
The face model in your browser places 478 points on your face. From them the test takes four readings: face length (from the top of the forehead to the chin) against the width across the cheeks, the jaw width at its corners against the same cheek width, the chin width against the jaw width, and the angle at the corners of the jaw.
The three ratios are compared with 73 men: the front-facing photos of men with the mouth closed from our reference set of public figures, measured with the same model. Their middle third reads 1.16 to 1.20 for length, 0.801 to 0.819 for jaw width and 0.404 to 0.414 for chin width. The jaw angle is read against 126° to 142°, the range a front photo typically shows, the same one the gonial angle calculator uses.
Each reading in the bottom or top third sets part of the plan, and the reading furthest from the middle leads the result:
| Reading | Bottom third of men | Top third of men |
|---|---|---|
| Face length ÷ cheek width | Length at the chin, tight sides, a lowered cheek line, squared corners | A short chin, full sides, a mustache to break up the length |
| Jaw ÷ cheek width | Fuller sides | Tight sides and a rounded bottom |
| Chin ÷ jaw width | A beard squared off at the bottom | No change on its own |
| Jaw angle | Under 126°: short sides keep the angle visible | Over 142°: squared corners and a crisp neckline |
For a short face the test also works out how long to grow the chin. Hair below the chin lowers the bottom of the outline by its own length, so the length that brings your face to the middle of the men (1.18) is the gap times your cheek width. Your cheek width in millimeters comes from your iris, which is about 11.7 mm across in adults, as in the pupillary distance tool. The test keeps that length between 10 and 25 mm. Every other length in the plan is a typical trimmer setting, not a measurement.
The test then scores 11 beard styles against the plan, two points each for chin length and sides and one for the shape of the bottom, and shows the three that fit best and the two that work against your face, each with the reading behind it.
Beard styles and what each one does to your face
Every style changes the outline in its own way. The drawings put each one on the same oval face at the cheek width of an average man, from the lengths in the table.
| Style | Lengths | What it does to the outline |
|---|---|---|
| Short boxed beard | Sides 6 to 10 mm, chin about 13 mm, a lowered cheek line and squared edges. | Adds a little length and a little width, with clean corners. The safe middle. |
| Faded beard | Sides faded from skin at the sideburns to about 6 mm at the jaw, chin 15 to 20 mm. | Adds length at the chin and almost no width at the sideburns. |
| Heavy stubble | 3 to 5 mm all over, with a clean cheek line and neckline. | Shades the jaw edge without moving the outline. |
| Rounded full beard | Sides 13 to 16 mm, chin about 25 mm, rounded at the bottom. | Adds width at the jaw and some length, with a soft curve at the bottom. |
| Full boxed beard | Sides 13 to 16 mm, chin about 25 mm, cut square at the bottom. | Adds width at the jaw and some length, with square corners at the bottom. |
| Circle beard | Mustache and chin beard joined in a ring around the mouth, about 10 mm, cheeks shaved. | Adds a little length at the chin and nothing at the sides. |
| Van Dyke | A chin beard of about 20 mm trimmed to a point, a separate mustache, cheeks shaved. | Adds length and a point at the chin, nothing at the sides. |
| Balbo | A chin beard spreading along the jaw, a separate mustache, no sideburns, 6 to 13 mm. | Adds width and corners at the chin and lower jaw, nothing at the sideburns. |
| Chin strap | A narrow band about 6 mm long along the jaw line, ear to ear, no mustache. | Draws a line along the jaw edge without adding length or width. |
| Ducktail | Sides about 10 mm, the chin grown to 40 mm or more and trimmed to a point. | Adds a lot of length and a point at the chin. |
| Mutton chops | Full sideburns, 13 mm or more, grown down to the jaw, chin and upper lip shaved. | Adds width at the sides and nothing at the chin. |

Beard style for your face shape
If you already know your face shape, these are the picks the same rules give for each one. Your own face sits somewhere around its shape, which is why the photo test reads your numbers instead.
| Face shape | Best | Works against it |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Short boxed beard, Rounded full beard, Full boxed beard | Van Dyke, Mutton chops |
| Round | Faded beard, Balbo, Van Dyke | Mutton chops, Rounded full beard |
| Square | Faded beard, Van Dyke, Circle beard | Mutton chops, Full boxed beard |
| Oblong | Rounded full beard, Full boxed beard, Mutton chops | Van Dyke, Faded beard |
| Heart | Full boxed beard, Short boxed beard, Rounded full beard | Ducktail, Chin strap |
| Diamond | Rounded full beard, Full boxed beard, Short boxed beard | Ducktail, Van Dyke |
Each shape has its own page with the beards drawn on that face: round face, oval face, square face, oblong or long face, heart-shaped face and diamond face. For the hair above the beard, the hairstyle finder matches cuts to the same shapes.
The neckline and the cheek line
The two lines you trim decide how sharp any beard looks. Braun’s grooming guide puts the neckline two fingers, about 1.5 inches, above the Adam’s apple, on a line that curves back to just under the ears. Lower than that and the beard runs down the neck; higher and it cuts into the jaw and the face looks wider.
The cheek line is the upper edge of the beard on the cheeks. The test lowers it, to a straight line from the sideburn toward the corner of the mouth, when your face is short or your jaw wide: less beard high on the cheeks makes the face read longer and narrower. Otherwise it keeps the natural line and only clears the stray hairs above it. Both lines are drawn on your photo in the result.
- Step 1Comb the beard down. Place two fingers above your Adam’s apple and trim everything below a line from there back to just under each ear.
- Step 2For a lowered cheek line, run a straight edge from the bottom of the sideburn to just above the corner of the mouth and trim above it. For a natural line, trim only the stray hairs above where the beard grows thick.
- Step 3Trim the sides and the chin to the lengths in your plan, sides first, then the chin longer or not.
Taking the photo with a beard
A beard does not stop the test. We sorted 136 front-facing men in our reference photos by eye: 59 clean-shaven, 34 with stubble, 32 with a short beard and 11 with a full beard. On all 11 full beards the face model drew the jaw line inside the beard, above its lower edge: it reads close to the face under the hair, not the beard’s outline. Short beards read the same as clean-shaven faces within 0.01 on all three ratios. The 11 full beards read a jaw of 0.830 and a chin of 0.436 against 0.807 and 0.420 for clean-shaven men, and they are different men, so part of that gap is bone.
The photo matters more than the beard. An open mouth or a smile with teeth moves the chin point down: on the reference men it raised the median length from 1.18 to 1.19 and the chin ratio from 0.408 to 0.425. The test reads only photos taken the way the 73 men were: mouth closed, head turned less than 0.12 face widths and tilted less than 8°, and asks for another photo otherwise.
- Step 1Comb your beard down flat so it does not stick out past the jaw.
- Step 2Face the camera straight on, about an arm’s length away, camera at eye level, chin level.
- Step 3Close your mouth and relax your face. Use even light from the front.
Stubble, a short beard or a full beard?
Length is a choice of look as much as shape. In Dixson and Brooks’ 2013 study, women rated heavy stubble the most attractive of four levels of facial hair, and full beards the highest for how healthy a man looked and how good a father he seemed. In Dixson and colleagues’ 2017 study, beards raised ratings of masculinity and dominance. Both are ratings of photos of small sets of men, so they show a tendency, not a rule.
Growth limits the choice too. If your cheeks grow patchy, the styles that keep the cheeks clear (a circle beard, a Van Dyke, a Balbo) carry the shape at the chin instead. The test reads shape, not how dense your beard grows, so pick from your three the one your beard can fill.
FAQ
Common questions
Which beard style suits me?+
It depends on three things a photo can measure: how long your face is for its width, how wide your jaw is, and how broad your chin is. A face shorter than two thirds of men needs length at the chin and tight sides (a faded beard, a Balbo, a Van Dyke). A face longer than two thirds of men needs width at the sides and a short chin (a full beard, mutton chops). A wide jaw keeps the sides tight, a narrow jaw takes fuller sides, and a narrow chin wants a beard squared off at the bottom. Upload a photo and the test reads all three and picks for you.
What is the best beard style for a round face?+
A beard that adds length at the chin and keeps the sides tight: a faded beard, a Balbo or a Van Dyke, with a lowered, angled cheek line. Avoid a rounded full beard and mutton chops: both add width at the sides of a face that is already short for its width.
What beard suits an oval face?+
Almost any. An oval face sits in the middle of men for length, jaw and chin, so a short boxed beard or a full beard keeps it in balance. The styles that change a balanced face most are a Van Dyke (a long point with shaved cheeks) and mutton chops (full sides with a shaved chin).
What beard is best for a long face?+
One that adds width at the sides and keeps the chin short: a rounded full beard, a full boxed beard or mutton chops, with a mustache to break up the length. Avoid a Van Dyke, a faded beard with a long chin and a ducktail: every 10 mm of beard below the chin adds about 0.07 to a face length that is already long for its width.
What beard suits a square face?+
A beard with the length at the chin and tight sides, rounded at the bottom: a faded beard, a Van Dyke or a circle beard. Avoid a full boxed beard and mutton chops, which widen a jaw that is already wide.
How do I know my face shape for a beard?+
You do not need the label. This test reads the three measurements a beard changes, length, jaw width and chin width, and compares them with 73 men, so the plan comes from your own numbers rather than a shape name. If you want the name too, the face shape detector measures it from the same kind of photo.
Can a beard fix a weak jawline or chin?+
It changes how the outline reads, not the bone. Hair below the chin lowers the bottom of the outline, a beard squared off at the bottom widens a narrow chin, and a crisp neckline draws a jaw line where the bone reads soft. If your jaw angle reads above the 126° to 142° front-photo range, the test squares off the bottom and keeps the neckline crisp for that reason.
Should I shave before taking the photo?+
No. On all 11 full beards in our reference photos, the face model drew the jaw line inside the beard, close to the skin, and short beards read the same as clean-shaven faces within 0.01. Comb the beard down flat, close your mouth and face the camera. An open mouth or a smile with teeth moves the chin point down, so the test asks for another photo when it sees one.
Is stubble or a full beard more attractive?+
In one well-known study, women rated heavy stubble the most attractive and full beards the highest for how healthy and how good a father a man looked; clean-shaven faces and light stubble rated lower on most measures (Dixson and Brooks, Evolution and Human Behavior, 2013). Those are ratings of photos of a few men, so treat them as a tendency. The shape of the beard is what this test is about.
Is my photo uploaded?+
No. The face model runs in your browser and your photo stays on your device. Nothing about your face is sent to a server.
