Best beard styles for a round face
A round face is about as wide as it is long, with soft corners at the jaw. The beard that suits it adds length at the chin and keeps the sides tight. Check your own face with one photo below: the test measures your length, jaw and chin against 73 men.

The science
Why these beards work on a round face
01
A round face reads round because its length is close to its width. A beard can change that ratio directly: hair below the chin lowers the bottom of the outline by its own length, while hair on the sides widens it. So the plan for a round face is length at the chin and tight sides, the sides short or faded to skin at the sideburns.
02
Corners help too. A round face has soft angles at the jaw, so a beard with a squared-off bottom and a lowered, straight cheek line from the sideburn toward the corner of the mouth adds the lines the face does not have. A faded beard, a Balbo and a Van Dyke all do this. A rounded full beard and mutton chops do the opposite: both put their volume at the sides, which makes a round face rounder.
03
How long at the chin depends on how short your face is. On our reference men the middle third read 1.16 to 1.20 times as long as wide; a round face reads lower. Each 10 mm of beard below the chin adds about 0.07 to that ratio for an average face, so 10 to 20 mm at the chin is usually enough. The photo test works out the length for your face.
The 3 best beards for a round face, and 2 to avoid
Best: a faded beard, a Balbo and a Van Dyke. Works against it: mutton chops and a rounded full beard. The same rules choose for the photo test, so a face that measures round gets these picks; yours may differ where your numbers do.
Pick 1
Faded beard
Adds length at the chin of a short face. Keeps the sides tight, so it adds no width.
Pick 2
Balbo
Adds some length at the chin of a short face. Keeps the sides tight, so it adds no width. Gives a short face corners at the jaw.
Pick 3
Van Dyke
Adds length at the chin of a short face. Keeps the sides tight, so it adds no width.
Works against it
Mutton chops
Its shaved chin adds no length to a short face.
Works against it
Rounded full beard
Its full sides add width to a short face.
Is your face really round?
Face shape by eye is a guess: hair hides the outline and a mirror flips it. The photo test at the top of this page reads the three measurements a beard works on and compares them with 73 men, so it picks your beard without needing the shape name. To name the shape, the face shape detector measures it from one photo, and the beard style finder has the full method and all 11 styles.
FAQ
Common questions
What beard makes a round face look slimmer?+
A beard with length at the chin and short sides: a faded beard, a Balbo or a Van Dyke, with a lowered cheek line. Length below the chin makes the face read longer, and tight sides keep it from reading wider.
Should a round face have a full beard?+
A full beard works if the sides stay shorter than the chin and the bottom is squared off. A rounded full beard with full sides is the version to avoid: it adds width exactly where a round face is already wide.
Is stubble good for a round face?+
Stubble is neutral: it shades the jaw edge without changing the outline, so it neither helps nor hurts the roundness. If you want the face to read longer, let the chin grow 10 to 20 mm longer than the sides.
