Best beard styles for a square face
A square face has a jaw nearly as wide as the cheekbones, with strong corners. The beard that suits it keeps the sides tight, puts the length at the chin and rounds off the corners. Check your own face with one photo below.

The science
Why these beards work on a square face
01
A square face is wide at the jaw and fairly short. Full sides would widen that jaw further, so the sides stay tight, short or faded. The length goes to the chin, which makes the face read longer and draws the eye to the middle of the jaw rather than its corners.
02
The bottom of the beard is the other lever. A square jaw already has corners, and a beard cut square at the bottom repeats them. A beard rounded at the chin softens them. A faded beard, a Van Dyke and a circle beard all keep the sides clear and the chin as the focus. A full boxed beard and mutton chops widen the jaw that is already wide.
03
A strong jaw is often why men with square faces want a beard that shows it. Short sides do that: stubble or a few millimeters along the jaw keep the angle visible. The photo test reads your jaw angle and says whether it reads sharp, typical or soft.
The 3 best beards for a square face, and 2 to avoid
Best: a faded beard, a Van Dyke and a circle beard. Works against it: mutton chops and a full boxed beard. The same rules choose for the photo test, so a face that measures square gets these picks; yours may differ where your numbers do.
Pick 1
Faded beard
Adds length at the chin of a short face. Keeps the sides tight on a wide jaw.
Pick 2
Van Dyke
Adds length at the chin of a short face. Keeps the sides tight on a wide jaw.
Pick 3
Circle beard
Adds some length at the chin of a short face. Keeps the sides tight on a wide jaw. Rounds off the corners of a wide jaw.
Works against it
Mutton chops
Its shaved chin adds no length to a short face.
Works against it
Full boxed beard
Its full sides widen a wide jaw.
Is your face really square?
Face shape by eye is a guess: hair hides the outline and a mirror flips it. The photo test at the top of this page reads the three measurements a beard works on and compares them with 73 men, so it picks your beard without needing the shape name. To name the shape, the face shape detector measures it from one photo, and the beard style finder has the full method and all 11 styles.
FAQ
Common questions
What beard suits a square face?+
A beard with tight sides, length at the chin and a rounded bottom: a faded beard, a Van Dyke or a circle beard. They keep the jaw from reading wider and soften its corners.
Should a square face avoid a boxed beard?+
A full boxed beard, with full sides and square corners, widens a jaw that is already wide and repeats its corners. A short boxed beard with the sides kept tight is the milder version.
Does stubble suit a square face?+
Yes. Stubble shades the jaw edge without widening it, so it shows a strong jaw angle. If your face is also short, let the chin grow longer than the sides.
