What your midface ratio means
01
Midface ratio compares the distance between your pupils with the vertical distance from that line to your upper lip. Around 1.0 or above gets described as a compact midface. Between about 0.9 and 1.0 is the broad middle. Below roughly 0.85 the midface reads long, and that is the point where it is visible to other people rather than only on a ruler.
02
This is a styling-community convention, not a clinical measurement, and there is no threshold in any medical reference. What is true is that midface length changes how a face reads: a long midface makes eyes sit higher and the nose look longer, and a very compact one can crowd the features. Knowing which side you are on tells you what to do with hair, brows and glasses.
03
The distance between your eyes and the height of your midface are set by bone and do not change in adults. Nothing sold online moves them. What changes the reading is camera height: shooting from below lengthens the midface, from above shortens it. Measure at eye level or the number is meaningless.
FAQ
Common questions
What is a compact midface?+
A ratio at or above about 1.0: a short midface relative to eye spacing. It is a descriptive term, not a medical one.
What is a long midface?+
A ratio below roughly 0.85. At that point the length is visible, not just measurable. It is common and not a defect, but it does change which styling choices work.
Can you change your midface ratio?+
No. It is bone. Tongue posture, exercises and devices do not move it in adults. Styling can change how it reads: fuller brows and volume at the sides of the face shorten the impression of a long midface.
Why does my ratio differ between photos?+
Camera height. Looking up or down changes the vertical measurement while pupil distance stays the same. Use one consistent eye-level photo.
