Midface ratio: how to measure a compact midface

The midface ratio divides the distance between your pupils by the vertical distance from that pupil line down to your upper lip. Near 1.0 is the reference. Below roughly 0.9 the midface reads long; above about 1.1 it reads compressed, with the features crowded toward the center. The bone that sets it finishes growing in adolescence, and only fat and surgery change the read.

What the ratio actually compares

Take the straight-line distance between the centers of your pupils. Then take the vertical distance from that pupil line down to the top edge of your upper lip. Divide the first by the second. Numbers at or above 1.0 describe a midface that is short relative to its width, which is what compact means; numbers below describe a longer, more vertical midface.

This is an internet metric rather than a clinical one. Surgeons and anthropometrists measure the midface, but they use named bony landmarks and their own reference planes, not the pupil-to-lip shortcut. Because online definitions differ in where the lower landmark sits, two calculators can return different numbers for the same photo. Compare your figure only against the same tool over time.

Taking the measurement without fooling yourself

Shoot straight on with the camera at eye height, head level, neutral expression, mouth closed and relaxed. A smile lifts the upper lip and shortens the vertical distance, which inflates the ratio. A chin lift does the same. These two errors account for most of the dramatic swings people report between photos, and both push the number in the flattering direction.

Lens distortion matters too. A phone held close enlarges whatever is nearest, usually the nose and central midface, and compresses the rest. Stand back about arm’s length or further and let the camera zoom in rather than moving it toward your face. Measure twice on separate days before you trust the result.

How much is too much, and what it costs

The thresholds here are convention, not clinical findings, and they are hedged accordingly. Between roughly 0.9 and 1.1 the midface reads proportionate and nobody notices it. Below about 0.9 the span from eyes to mouth reads long, which also tends to read older, since midface lengthening is one of the visible changes of aging. Above about 1.1 the features read crowded toward the center of the face.

A long midface costs more in perception than a short one does. It stretches the region where the eye looks for cheek support, so under-eye hollowing and flattened cheeks read stronger on a long midface than on a short one at the same age. Read the number beside your facial thirds, because a midface only reads long or short relative to the sections above and below it.

What actually changes it

Midface height is bone: the maxilla, the orbital floor, and the vertical position of the upper teeth, all finished growing in adolescence. No posture habit, massage routine, or exercise shortens an adult midface. Videos claiming otherwise are built around camera angle, expression, and lighting, and the number moves back when the pose is standardized.

What does shift is soft tissue. Midface fat pads descend over decades, cheek volume changes with body weight, and under-eye hollowing moves where the eye reads as ending. Filler or fat grafting to the cheek can make a long midface read shorter without touching the bone. Genuine skeletal change is a maxillofacial surgeon’s territory. Measure yours with the midface ratio tool; the SkinPal app tracks the same landmarks over time so a real shift shows as a trend rather than a one-off photo.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a good midface ratio?+

Near 1.0 is the reference. Between roughly 0.9 and 1.1 the midface reads proportionate. Below about 0.9 it reads long and tends to read older; above about 1.1 it reads compressed. These thresholds come from convention rather than clinical research, so treat them as approximate.

How do I measure my midface ratio at home?+

Take a level, straight-on photo at eye height. Measure the pupil-to-pupil distance, then the vertical distance from the pupil line to the top of the upper lip, and divide the first by the second. Keep your mouth closed and your expression neutral.

Can you shorten your midface?+

Not the bone. Midface height is set by the maxilla and orbital bone, which stop growing in the late teens. Cheek filler or fat grafting changes how long it reads. Skeletal midface procedures exist and belong in a conversation with a maxillofacial surgeon.

Why does my midface ratio change between photos?+

Expression, chin angle, and camera distance. Smiling shortens the measured height and raises the ratio, a lifted chin does the same, and a close phone camera distorts the center of the face. Standardize all three and the number stabilizes.
