Every human face is asymmetric, so the question is how much. Under about 3% difference between paired landmarks is universal and invisible. Past roughly 6 to 8% the difference is visible to other people, and it is usually driven by one feature: eye height, mouth corner, or jaw width. The two halves of the face develop semi-independently and take different mechanical loads afterward: chewing side preference, sleeping position, habitual expressions, and dental history all act unevenly. On top of that, almost everyone has some difference in eye height, ear position, or jaw width that was present from the start.
Because the differences are usually small, most people never notice their own until they photograph themselves. Then they notice constantly. The shift from not seeing it to seeing it everywhere is a shift in attention, not a change in the face, which is why a measured percentage is more useful than an impression.
How to test it without misleading yourself
Take a level, straight-on photo at eye height with a neutral expression and no head rotation. Compare paired landmarks across a vertical midline: pupil heights, mouth corner heights, nostril positions, and jaw width on each side, each expressed as a percentage of the relevant face dimension. Measured distances are far more reliable than judging by eye.
Do not use the mirror-half trick. Duplicating one half and flipping it produces two faces that look nothing like you, because it doubles every deviation from the midline at once, including the ones caused by your head being rotated two degrees. It reliably makes typical faces look distorted and returns no number you can use.
How much is too much, and what it costs
Under about 3% difference on any paired measurement is universal; no observer registers it and it is inside the error of the photo. Between roughly 3 and 6% you can find it in a photo if you look, and other people generally cannot. Past roughly 6 to 8% on a single feature, most often eye height or jaw width, it is visible to others, and past about 10% it is the first thing they see. Those percentages are a working rule from comparing many faces, not a clinical cutoff; what matters is the order of magnitude, not the exact figure.
Much of what people measure at the visible level is the camera: head rotation enlarges the near side, a close phone lens enlarges whatever is nearest, uneven light shades one side. Take three level photos on separate days; asymmetry that survives is real. Asymmetry that appeared over days, particularly affecting one side’s movement, is a reason to see a doctor promptly, not to measure.
What actually changes it
Bone asymmetry, a jaw longer on one side or an orbit set higher, is fixed in adults and moves only with orthognathic or craniofacial surgery. Soft tissue asymmetry has real levers: masseter bulk from one-sided chewing responds to changing the habit or to botulinum injections, uneven brow height responds to injectables, and cheek volume differences respond to filler. Posture and sleep-side habits shift the soft tissue over years.
The research on symmetry and attractiveness reports a modest preference for more symmetrical faces, weaker than the popular account, and asymmetry under the visible threshold plays no part in it.
