Facial thirds: how to measure and read them

The facial thirds split the face into three horizontal bands: hairline to brow, brow to the base of the nose, and nose base to the bottom of the chin. Bands within a few percent of each other read balanced. Once one band runs roughly a tenth longer than the other two, that section reads long to an observer. The bone is fixed; hairline and soft tissue are what move.

Where the three lines sit

The upper third runs from the hairline down to the brow line, taken at the brow ridge rather than the top of the eyebrow hair. The middle third runs from there to the base of the nose where the columella meets the lip. The lower third runs from the nose base to the lowest point of the chin. Each band is expressed as a percentage of total face height.

The convention comes from Renaissance drawing instruction and survives in surgical planning as a quick way to describe which section of a face is long or short. Measured populations do not cluster at exactly equal thirds; the lower third in particular often runs a little longer than the middle. Equal thirds are a reference line, not a population norm.

Measuring them from a photo

Face the camera straight on with your head level and the camera at eye height. Pull hair back off the forehead. Mark four horizontal lines: hairline, brow, nose base, and the bottom of the chin, then compare the three gaps as percentages of the total rather than in millimeters, since absolute size depends on how far away you stood.

Chin position is the main error source. Lifting or dropping the chin compresses one band and stretches another, and because the change is gradual it does not look like a mistake in the resulting photo. Level your head against a horizontal reference in the room, not against what feels straight, and take the measurement twice.

How much is too much, and what it costs

As a rule of thumb, three bands each within a few percentage points of a third of face height read balanced, and nobody outside a measuring session notices the difference. Once one band runs roughly a tenth longer than the other two, that section reads long: a long lower third reads as a long face or a heavy chin, a long middle third reads as a long nose, a long upper third reads as a high forehead.

The upper third is the least meaningful because its top boundary is hair, not bone. A receding hairline lengthens it without the skull changing, so the same head can measure balanced at twenty and top-heavy at forty on hairline alone. For a stable comparison, measure the middle and lower thirds against each other and treat the upper third as a note about the hairline.

What actually changes it

The middle and lower thirds are bone, set by the maxilla, the mandible, and the vertical position of the teeth, and they stop changing in the late teens. Orthodontics can alter lower-third height slightly in adults by changing how the teeth meet. Anything larger is orthognathic or chin surgery through a maxillofacial surgeon. Posture routines do not move any of it.

The upper third moves with the hairline, and hairline treatment or a hair transplant changes it directly; so does how you style the hair that frames the forehead. Soft tissue shifts the lower third a little with age as the upper lip lengthens. Yes, and it is the biggest confound in the measurement. The upper third is bounded by hair rather than bone, so hairline change alone can move the result substantially while the face underneath is unchanged. Rule it out first when comparing photos taken years apart.
