Soft Autumn shares its softness with Soft Summer and its warmth with True Autumn, which is why it sits between them. Hair is usually warm mid-brown, sometimes with natural gold that never quite reads blonde. Eyes are hazel, soft green or warm brown, and skin is warm-neutral with low contrast against both.
Mutedness leads, so the first question about any garment is not whether it is warm but whether it has grey in it. A clean, saturated warm colour will still overpower this colouring even though the hue is right.
The Soft Autumn palette, and why these colors work
Camel, sage, terracotta and clay are the backbone: all warm, all softened. Soft gold gives a yellow that does not go acid, and soft jade gives a green with enough warmth to belong. Dusty brick is the red that works, because the true reds are all too clear.
Sand and warm taupe are the everyday neutrals, with soft espresso as the deep anchor in place of black.

What to avoid, and what goes wrong
Icy colors are the first failure: icy pink, cool lilac, optical white. They bring a blue cast to warm skin, and on a muted face the contrast is doubly wrong. Pure black does both, which is why it so often looks severe on this colouring.
Full-saturation colour is the second: emerald, fuchsia, cobalt, bright coral. The hue can be close and the effect still wrong, because the clothing has a clarity the face does not.
Telling Soft Autumn apart from its neighbours
Soft Summer is the nearest confusion, and the separator is hue. Try camel against mauve in daylight. On Soft Autumn the camel makes skin look even and the mauve slightly grey; on Soft Summer the reverse happens. Both palettes are muted, so that test is more reliable than comparing depth.
True Autumn is the other neighbour: same warmth, more richness. If rust and mustard look luxurious rather than heavy, you are closer to True Autumn.

Not well near the face. Black is clear and cold, which is the opposite of this colouring on both axes. Soft espresso, dark olive and warm taupe give depth without the severity.
What is the best white for Soft Autumn?+
Oyster, cream or a warm off-white. Optical white creates a hard edge and pulls blue into warm skin.
What metals suit Soft Autumn?+
