True Winter is the coldest of the twelve seasons. Skin reads cool or neutral-cool, hair is dark brown to black without warm glints, and eyes are usually cool brown, clear blue or cool green. Contrast is high, but hue leads it.
Because coolness dominates, warm colors fail here faster than in any other season. A slightly-too-warm beige is noticeable on the face, which is why the neutral list is so short and so cold.
The True Winter palette, and why these colors work
True red is the signature: blue-based, saturated, with no orange. Royal blue and deep teal carry the blues, pine green the greens, and purple and cool plum the darker middle. Cool raspberry gives a pink that will not tip warm, and icy grey provides the one light colour in the set.
True white and black are both real neutrals, with cool grey and navy charcoal in between.

What to avoid, and what goes wrong
Warm colour is the failure to watch: orange, mustard, rust, tomato and warm camel. Each one puts yellow against skin with none, which reads as a dull cast across the whole face.
Muted colour is the second failure. Sage, mushroom, dusty rose and slate are not warm, but they are softened, and this colouring has clarity that softened colour cannot meet. Beige manages to be both, which is why it is the least useful neutral here.
Telling True Winter apart from its neighbours
Deep Winter is the neighbour, separated by which axis leads. Deep Winter leads with depth, so burgundy and midnight violet suit it while icy pastels can feel thin. True Winter leads with hue, so a clear cool colour works at several depths as long as it stays cold.
Bright Winter is the other side, one step brighter and slightly less deep. If the loudest brights feel right rather than strong, that is the direction.

Can True Winters wear black?+
Yes. This is one of the few seasons where black is genuinely flattering, and the same is true of optical white. Together they give the high-contrast look this colouring carries naturally.
What metals suit True Winter?+
Silver, white gold and platinum. Yellow gold reads brassy against cool skin, and rose gold only works if it is very pale.
Which red should True Winters wear?+
