Three separate anatomical features get packaged under one name. First, a projecting supraorbital ridge that sets the eye back and casts shadow. Second, limited visible upper lid, either from a low crease or a fold resting near the lash line. Third, a vertically compressed eye opening rather than a round one.
A level or positive canthal tilt is usually attached as a fourth requirement. Because all four vary independently, most people have some and not others. Describing your own eyes by those four features separately carries more information than the bundle name does, and each of the four has its own guide on this site with its own threshold.
How to tell if you have the configuration
Photograph the eyes straight on at eye height under ordinary overhead room light with a relaxed brow. The configuration is present when three things are true at once: the brow bone casts a visible shadow onto the upper lid, less than about 2 mm of mobile lid shows above the lashes, and the opening is clearly wider than it is tall. Tilt at or above 0° completes it.
The configuration is absent when the lid shows several millimeters of exposed skin under the brow, when the opening is round, or when the brow bone casts no shadow in room light. Most eyes fall between, with one or two of the features. That is the normal case, and it is exactly where the label stops being useful.
How much is too much, and what it costs
The configuration costs nothing while the lash line stays visible. Once the fold covers the lashes, it is hooding, whatever the forum calls it, and it costs what hooding costs: the eye reads smaller and heavier, makeup disappears when the eye opens, and in time the fold can narrow the upper field of vision. A deep-set eye with heavy hooding also ages faster in the upper lid as orbital fat thins.
The label also encodes a ranking that rests on nothing. Eye configurations it rejects appear constantly across faces widely considered attractive, and the categories mostly reflect the preferences of the small communities that invented the vocabulary. If reduced lid show or a drooping lid has appeared recently on one side, that is a clinician question and not a look.
What actually changes it
Nothing you can train. Brow ridge projection is bone, finished growing in the late teens. Crease height is set by how the levator attaches. Eye opening shape is set by the lid margins and orbit. Exercises, tongue posture, and squinting drills do not touch any of them; the transformations circulated online are lighting from above, a lower camera angle, and a slight squint.
Procedures exist for each component individually: brow bone augmentation or forehead contouring by a craniofacial surgeon, blepharoplasty for a heavy fold or canthoplasty for tilt by an oculoplastic surgeon.
