Deep set and hooded eyes produce a similar impression from different anatomy. Deep set is socket depth: a shadowed gap between the brow bone and the lid. A deep set eye sits further back within the bony orbit, usually paired with a prominent brow ridge above it. The effect is a shadowed, recessed look with a visible gap between the brow bone and the lid. It is bone architecture, present from adolescence, and it does not develop later or change in adults.
The giveaway is shadow behavior. Because the eye sits behind a projecting rim, overhead light casts a distinct shadow into the socket and the upper lid area darkens. Under flat frontal light, deep set eyes look considerably less recessed, which is why studio portraits and selfies of the same person disagree so often about the same eyes.
What hooded means
A hooded eye has skin from above the crease folding down over the mobile lid, reducing or eliminating visible lid when the eye is open. The eyeball itself may sit at an ordinary depth. The hood can be present from birth as a low crease, or develop with age as upper lid skin loosens and the brow descends.
The practical test is the crease. Close your eye gently and note where the crease sits, then open it. If a fold of skin covers that crease and rests near the lash line when open, the eye is hooded. That test says nothing about socket depth, which is the point of running it.
How much is too much, and what it costs
A deep set eye with lid still visible under the brow shadow costs little; it reads intense under directional light and flat under frontal light. It is too much once the shadow from the brow ridge hides the lid and lash line in ordinary room light, at which point the eye reads sunken and tired rather than defined, and the upper lid hollows with age faster than in other eyes.
A hood is too much once the fold rests on or covers the lash line with the eye open: the eye reads smaller, liner and shadow disappear when the eye opens, and eventually the fold narrows the upper field of vision. That last point is a functional problem for an ophthalmologist. Hooding or drooping that has appeared on one side over weeks is a reason to see a clinician promptly.
What actually changes each one
Deep set is bone and does not change. What changes is the tissue in the socket: orbital fat loss with age deepens the shadow, and filler or fat grafting to the upper lid hollow softens it. Lighter shades in the socket counter the shadow for makeup. Brow shaping that lifts the tail opens the gap visually without moving anything.
Hooding is skin and brow position, and both have real levers.
