Facial dimorphism: what differs between male and female faces
Sexual dimorphism in the face describes average structural differences between men and women, concentrated in the brow, jaw, and lower face. The distributions overlap heavily: one feature past the other sex’s average is common and reads as nothing. Three or four together are what observers read across a room. The most consistent differences are in the brow and jaw. Male faces average a more projecting supraorbital ridge, a heavier and wider mandible with a gonial angle a few degrees lower, a longer lower face, and a more prominent chin. Female faces average a smoother forehead, a more vertical brow area, and a softer jaw transition.
Several commonly cited features differ less than expected. Cheekbone prominence overlaps substantially, eye size differences are small, and much of what reads as masculine or feminine in a photograph comes from soft tissue distribution, hair, and grooming rather than from skeletal structure. The same bone can read differently across a decade of styling.
How much the distributions overlap
Heavily. For almost every individual measurement, a large share of men and women fall within the same range, and classification by any single feature performs poorly. What allows people to sex a face reliably is the combination of many small differences at once. Reading a face as masculine or feminine is a sum, not a single measurement.
This matters for self-assessment. Measuring one feature and finding it past the other sex’s average tells you close to nothing, because a substantial fraction of your own sex already sits there. A gonial angle of 118° on a woman or a brow ridge with little projection on a man are ordinary findings that observers do not read as anything.
How much is too much, and what it costs
The threshold is cumulative. One feature on the far side of the average reads as nothing. Two read as a characteristic of that face. Three or four together, say a projecting brow ridge, a wide low-angled jaw, a long lower third, and a heavy chin on a woman, are what observers read as a masculine face without being able to say why, and the reverse set on a man reads as soft.
The cost is entirely in perception and depends on what the person wants read. For most people it costs nothing. For someone who wants the read shifted, the useful step is naming which of the features is doing the work, because the levers differ by feature: brow ridge and jaw width are bone, lower-third length is bone and teeth, and everything else is soft tissue that moves.
What actually changes it
Soft tissue and surface do most of the everyday work. Body fat distribution, skin texture, hair, eyebrow shape, and facial hair shift the read substantially without any bone changing. Hormones in adults alter fat distribution, skin, and hair rather than remodeling the skeleton, which is why facial feminization and masculinization surgery exist as separate interventions from hormone therapy.
Bone changes only with surgery: brow bone contouring or augmentation, jaw and chin reshaping, and lower-third shortening or lengthening are craniofacial and maxillofacial procedures planned with imaging.
