Pupillary distance: measuring your PD
Pupillary distance, written PD, is the distance in millimeters between the centers of your pupils. Most adults measure roughly 54 to 74 mm, with the average in the low sixties. Unlike the other measurements here it has a practical cost: lenses centered more than about 2 mm off your PD introduce unwanted prism, and in a strong prescription that means strain and headaches. It is fixed in adults, so measure it once, properly.

PD is the straight-line distance between the centers of your two pupils, measured in millimeters. Lenses have an optical center, and that center needs to sit in front of your pupil. If it does not, you look through the lens off-axis, which introduces unwanted prism and can cause eye strain, headaches, or a sense that the glasses are slightly wrong.
Most adults fall roughly between 54 and 74 mm, with the adult average around the low sixties and children measuring smaller. A PD anywhere in that band is simply a number to give the optician. The effect of an error grows with prescription strength, so a couple of millimeters that pass unnoticed in weak lenses can be genuinely uncomfortable in strong ones.
Binocular, monocular and near PD
Binocular PD is the single pupil-to-pupil number. Monocular PD splits it into two figures, each measured from the bridge of the nose to one pupil, because faces are not symmetrical and the two halves are frequently unequal by a millimeter or more. Progressive and high-prescription lenses are usually fit with monocular values for exactly that reason.
Near PD is smaller than distance PD because the eyes converge when focusing on something close, typically by a few millimeters. If a form asks which one you have, it matters: supplying a near PD where a distance PD is expected will center the lenses incorrectly for everything but reading.
How much error is too much, and what it costs
The tolerance depends on the prescription. In a weak single-vision lens, an error of 2 to 3 mm often goes unnoticed. In a strong prescription or a progressive lens, an error of more than about 2 mm produces enough induced prism to cause eye strain, headaches, distorted edges, or the sense that the floor tilts. The stronger the lens, the tighter the tolerance.
Monocular asymmetry is the common hidden error. If your pupils sit 30 and 33 mm from the bridge and the lenses are centered at 31.5 each, both eyes are 1.5 mm off in opposite directions, which in a strong prescription is felt. Headsets are more forgiving but show the same effect as blur at the edges of the display when the setting is well off your number.
Measuring it, and when to have it done properly
Hold a millimeter ruler against your brow, close your right eye, and align the zero mark with the center of your left pupil while looking at a distant object. Without moving the ruler, switch eyes and read the value at the center of your right pupil. Repeat several times and take the value that recurs. The common failure is focusing on the ruler, which converges your eyes and returns a near PD.
For a strong prescription, progressives, or any pair you wear all day, have an optician measure it with a pupillometer, which gives monocular values and beats a ruler. A home number is fine for low-power single-vision lenses and for headset setup. PD is fixed in adults, so an accurate figure can be reused.
