Gonial angle: what it is, and how to measure yours

The gonial angle is the corner of your jaw, where the horizontal body of the mandible turns up toward the ear. Most adults measure about 110° to 130°; above roughly 130° the corner reads soft, and past about 140° the jaw and neck run together in profile. The bone does not move. Fat, masseter bulk, and surgery are the only levers.

Verdict

110°–130° typical

About 110° to 130° is typical; above roughly 130° the jaw corner reads soft, and past about 140° it barely registers in profile

What the gonial angle measures

Your mandible is not a straight bone. It runs forward along the jawline, then turns upward at the back to meet the skull near your ear. The gonial angle is that corner, measured between the lower border of the jaw and the rear edge of the ascending branch, the ramus. It is the number people mean when they call a jawline sharp or soft.

A smaller angle is a more abrupt, squarer corner. A larger angle is a more gradual, rounded transition. Anatomical studies generally place adults between about 110° and 130°, with roughly 120° near the middle of the range and men averaging a few degrees lower than women. Where you sit in that band is genetics and growth, finished by the late teens.

How to measure it from a photo

You need a true side profile: head level, camera at eye height, no tilt up or down, and hair cleared from the jaw and ear. Tilting the chin up flattens the angle and makes it read sharper than it is, which is why before-and-after photos of jaw techniques are so often two different head positions rather than two different jaws.

Draw one line along the lower border of the jaw from chin to corner, and a second line up the back edge of the jaw toward the ear. The angle where they cross is your gonial angle. The gonial angle calculator does this from a photo on your device, using facial landmarks rather than hand-drawn lines, which removes the largest source of error.

How much is too much, and what it costs

Below about 110° the corner reads heavy and square, and the lower face often reads wide from the front. Above roughly 130° the corner softens and the jawline loses its visible edge. Past about 140° there is no clear corner at all, and the profile runs from cheek into neck in one line. That last band is where people describe a jaw as receding or absent.

The cost is definition, and it compounds with body fat. The same 135° angle reads soft at a lean body composition and disappears entirely under a modest layer of submental fat, because the fat fills exactly the corner the angle would otherwise show. A jaw corner that has shifted recently, or one that clicks, locks, or hurts, is a joint or dental question for a clinician, not a cosmetic measurement.

What actually changes it

The angle itself is bone and does not move. What changes is the tissue over it. Losing body fat exposes the existing corner. Masseter reduction, either by cutting back heavy chewing or with botulinum injections that shrink the muscle, narrows the lower face but can also make a soft corner read softer, since the muscle was adding bulk at the angle. Neither alters the bone.

Changing the bone means surgery: angle implants to add a corner, or a mandibular angle osteotomy to cut and reshape one, both performed by a maxillofacial surgeon with real recovery and risk. Striking the jaw to grow bone does not work and causes harm. Measure your angle with the gonial angle calculator from a level profile; if you are losing weight, the SkinPal app tracks the change so the trend is visible rather than guessed.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a good gonial angle?+

About 110° to 130° covers most adults, with roughly 120° near the middle. Lower reads sharper and squarer, higher reads softer. Above roughly 130° the corner reads soft, and past about 140° it stops registering as a corner in profile.

Is a high gonial angle bad?+

Above about 130° the jaw corner reads soft, and past about 140° the jawline and neck merge in profile. That costs visible definition, and body fat makes it worse. It is not a health problem unless the jaw has shifted recently or hurts, which is a clinician question.

Does mewing change your gonial angle?+

There is no good evidence that tongue posture changes adult jaw bone. Facial bones finish growing in the late teens, and the studies cited for mewing are case reports without controls. Any visible difference in adults is posture, body fat, or photo angle.

Does chewing gum sharpen the jawline?+

Heavy chewing can hypertrophy the masseter muscle, which adds bulk at the jaw corner. That changes the soft tissue over the angle rather than the angle itself, and for many people it widens the lower face rather than defining it. It can also aggravate jaw joint pain.
