Facial width-to-height ratio, written fWHR, divides the width of the face across the cheekbones by the height from the upper lip to the upper eyelid. Most adults land roughly between 1.7 and 2.0. Above about 2.0 the face reads broad; below about 1.7 it reads long and narrow. The bone is fixed, body fat moves the number, and the personality research attached to it has not held up.

Width is taken across the widest part of the face at the cheekbones, the bizygomatic width. Height is taken from the top edge of the upper lip to the upper eyelid, a deliberately short vertical span that excludes the forehead entirely. Width divided by height gives the ratio, and most reported adult values sit between roughly 1.7 and 2.0.
That height landmark is the unusual part. Excluding the forehead avoids the hairline problem, and it means fWHR is not a measure of how wide a face looks overall. A tall forehead or a long chin does not enter the calculation, which surprises people comparing the number to their impression in the mirror. It measures the central band of the face only.
Measuring it yourself
Use a straight-on photo with the camera at eye height, head level, neutral expression. Find the widest horizontal span of the face at cheekbone level, then the vertical distance from the upper lip edge to the upper eyelid, and divide. Working in pixels is fine because the ratio cancels out the scale.
Two errors dominate. Head rotation shortens the apparent width on one side and drops the ratio, and any expression that raises the upper lip or opens the eyes changes the height landmark. Body weight also moves the widest point of the face, so the same skull can measure differently across a year of weight change.
How much is too much, and what it costs
Inside roughly 1.7 to 2.0, width is not something observers register on its own. Above about 2.0 the face reads broad and, in perception studies, more dominant; that is a fact about how observers respond, not about the person. Below about 1.7 the face reads long and narrow, which at the extreme reads gaunt, especially when paired with low body fat and a long lower third.
The cost of a high ratio is mostly in how photographs flatten it: a broad midface loses cheekbone definition under frontal light and reads heavier than in person. The cost of a low ratio shows with age, as midface fat descends and a narrow face hollows first. Body weight moves the ratio by a tenth or more in either direction, which is larger than most of the differences people argue about.
What actually changes it, and what the research supports
Bizygomatic width is bone and does not change in adults. Body fat and masseter bulk change the widest soft-tissue point, so weight loss lowers a high ratio slightly and weight gain raises a low one. Cheek implants or fat grafting widen the midface; zygoma reduction narrows it. Those are surgical decisions for a maxillofacial or plastic surgeon, not routines.
The 2010s papers linking fWHR to aggression and risk-taking have largely failed to replicate in larger samples, and the testosterone mechanism has not held up. What survives is that people rate wider faces as more dominant, which is perception rather than character.
