What the curve describes

Turn your head about forty-five degrees from the camera and trace the outline of your cheek from the outer eye area downward. It bulges outward over the cheekbone, reverses, and sweeps inward toward the corner of the mouth. That convex-then-concave sequence is the ogee, and the same S appears on both sides of the face.

There is no number attached to it. No target angle and no accepted scoring method exists, so any tool that rates your ogee is inventing a scale. What does exist is a clear observable: whether the line reverses direction at all, and how deep the hollow beneath the bulge runs. Those two things are what practitioners mean when they discuss it.

How to see it on yourself

The curve does not exist in a straight-on photo and it does not exist in a true profile. It only appears in the oblique view, which is why people consistently fail to find it when they photograph themselves front-on. Rotate roughly forty-five degrees, keep your head level, and use soft directional light from above and to one side.

Lighting does more work here than geometry. Flat frontal light erases the curve entirely, while light from above and to one side exaggerates it. How much is too much, and what it costs

Too little curve is the common direction: a line that runs nearly straight from the under-eye to the mouth corner in three-quarter view, with no bulge over the bone. That reads flat and, past a certain point, tired, because the eye reads missing cheek convexity as descended volume. It also removes the highlight a cheekbone would catch, so the midface reads featureless in photographs.

Too much curve is a hollow deep enough to shadow under the bone with normal overhead light. That reads gaunt, and in a face with low body fat it reads as illness or age rather than definition. The convexity above it is then read as sunken cheeks rather than high cheekbones. A hollow that appeared quickly, with unintended weight loss, is a reason to see a clinician.

What actually changes it

Volume distribution. The convex part sits over the zygomatic bone and the fat pad in front of it; the concave part is the hollow beneath. Descending or depleted fat pads flatten the upper half while deepening the lower, which is the pattern with age. Substantial fat loss flattens the bulge and deepens the hollow at once, which is why faces read more angular but also more tired after weight loss.

Bone does not change.
