What Niacinamide is doing
Niacinamide supports the skin barrier and is used for redness, oil control and uneven tone. Morning or night, and it layers under almost anything.
Commonly 2%–5%. Above 10% offers no clear extra benefit and is more likely to cause flushing. One of the few actives that plays well with nearly everything, which is why it turns up in so many formulas alongside other ingredients.
What Hyaluronic Acid is doing
Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant, it holds water in the upper layers of skin. It is not an exfoliant despite the name. Any time. Best applied to damp skin and sealed with a moisturizer.
Concentration matters far less than the formula around it; most serums sit near 1%. In very dry air it can pull water from deeper skin instead of the atmosphere, which is why it can feel drying if you skip the moisturizer on top.
How to fit both into a routine
You can layer them in the same routine. Apply the thinner, more watery product first and give each a moment to settle.
Both are among the gentlest actives in common use, so irritation is unlikely from the combination itself.
Signs you have overdone it
Stinging that does not settle within a minute or two, tightness, unexpected flaking, a shiny or waxy look, or new breakouts in places you do not usually get them. Those point to a damaged barrier rather than to either ingredient failing.
If that happens, drop both actives and go back to a plain cleanser and moisturizer until your skin feels normal again, usually one to two weeks. Reintroduce one at a time, not both.
FAQ
Common questions
Can I use niacinamide and hyaluronic acid in the same routine?+
Fine to use together. No conflict, these two are in a very large share of routines.
Which order should I apply them in?+
When two products go on together, the general rule is thinnest to thickest, letting each absorb first. If you are splitting them across morning and night, order stops mattering.
How long before I know it is working?+
Skin turnover is slow. Give any routine change eight to twelve weeks before you judge it, and change one thing at a time, otherwise you cannot tell which product did what.
Is this medical advice?+
No. This is general formulation and tolerance guidance. Concentration, the rest of the formula and your own skin matter more than any pairing rule, so patch test anything new and speak to a clinician about persistent reactions.
