Does mewing work?
No good controlled evidence shows that resting your tongue on your palate changes adult facial bone; the facial skeleton finishes growing and its sutures fuse in the late teens. The posture itself is harmless, and the transformations online are camera angle, body fat, and time. If you mouth-breathe at night, snore, or wake unrefreshed, that is a medical question about your airway, and it matters more than your jawline.

Do your facial analysis: Side profile analysis →What the claim is
Mewing is the practice of holding the whole tongue flat against the palate, teeth lightly together, lips closed, as a permanent resting posture. The claim attached to it is that sustained upward pressure remodels the maxilla forward and up over months or years, sharpening the jawline, improving the side profile and lifting the cheekbones, in adults, without braces or surgery.
It comes out of orthotropics, a school of thought about how oral posture and breathing influence facial growth in children. That underlying question is a legitimate area of orthodontic discussion. What happened online is that a hypothesis about growing faces was repackaged as a guaranteed technique for finished ones, and the qualifiers were dropped along the way.
What actually happens
The facial skeleton finishes growing in the late teens, and the sutures of the midface fuse. After that, moving bone requires sustained force of the kind orthodontic appliances apply, or surgery. The tongue at rest exerts light pressure, intermittently, against a structure that is no longer growing. There is no plausible pathway from that to a repositioned maxilla in an adult.
The evidence base reflects this. What supports mewing is case reports and personal accounts, not controlled trials with measurement. Nobody has run the study that would settle it: matched adults, randomized, with imaging before and after. Where evidence is absent, the honest statement is that it is absent, not that the technique is secretly suppressed.
What the before-and-afters are showing
Camera angle does most of the work. Raising the chin, moving the camera to eye level, and extending the neck slightly will transform a jawline in a single photo with no change to the person at all. Add a longer lens distance, better lighting from above, and a neutral rather than smiling expression, and two photos taken minutes apart can look like years of progress.
Then there is everything that genuinely changed in the interval. Most mewing attempts run six months to several years, during which people lose body fat, finish puberty, gain muscle, sleep better and learn how to photograph themselves. Those are real changes. Attributing them to tongue position is the error, not the improvement itself.
What is worth doing anyway
Good tongue posture and nasal breathing are reasonable habits on their own terms. If you chronically mouth-breathe, snore, or wake unrefreshed, that is worth raising with a doctor or dentist, because the underlying cause, nasal obstruction or sleep-disordered breathing, matters for your health far more than your jawline does. That is a real finding people sometimes stumble into through mewing.
Today, keep the tongue posture if you like it, and see a doctor or dentist if you mouth-breathe, snore, or wake tired, because nasal obstruction and sleep-disordered breathing are treatable and worth finding. For the profile, the movable levers are body fat, sleep and sodium, sun protection, and posture, and an orthodontist can tell you in one visit what your bite can do. The side profile analysis measures your facial convexity and E-line from a photo, so change over months is measured, not shot from a better angle.
FAQ
Common questions
How long does mewing take to show results?+
No timeframe has been established, because no controlled study has shown a result to time. Claims of three months, six months or two years come from anecdote. If you are tracking your own face, use a fixed camera height, level head and consistent lighting, or you will mostly be measuring your photography.
Does mewing work at 25 or older?+
There is no evidence it changes bone at any adult age, and the case is weakest after growth finishes in the late teens. Tongue posture itself remains harmless at any age, and nasal breathing is worth having. Expect the habit, not the skeletal change.
Is mewing bad for your teeth or jaw?+
Light tongue-to-palate rest is not known to be harmful. Problems come from the aggressive versions, clenching the teeth hard, forcing the tongue up, or straining the jaw for long periods, which can cause jaw joint and muscle pain. If it hurts, stop, and mention it to your dentist.
Why do people say mewing changed their face?+
Because their faces often did change. Over the months or years involved, body fat, muscle, sleep, age and photography all shift. The experience is real; the attribution to tongue posture is the part without evidence behind it.
